THE LOGO

The logo was designed by Saint Vincent College art director George Fetkovich of the Department of Admission, Marketing and Communications in collaboration with the Pittsburgh Steelers and the National Football League.

“We are very proud of this design and are honored to have our college logo accompanying the Steelers logo for this special observance,” Hipps said.

The logo will be displayed on campus on pole banners, on the side of the Saint Vincent Neighborhood Trolley, on the hillside next to Saint Vincent bushes, on season schedules and T-shirts worn by Steelers personnel and news media and on the Pittsburgh Steelers and Saint Vincent websites, among other locations.

Windshield clings bearing the logo will be distributed to the first 50,000 cars entering campus.

The logo will also appear on water bottles, lapel pins and other items which will be given as gifts. It will not be applied to any apparel or souvenir items for sale.

The logo will also be used in conjunction with other events and activities planned this summer, which will be announced when plans are completed.

HISTORY

The Pittsburgh Steelers summer training camp began in 1966 when the team, then coached by Bill Austin, held the final two weeks of that summer’s camp on the campus of Saint Vincent College.

They arrived on the morning of Aug. 29 and began practicing that afternoon in their first workout since the previous Saturday’s loss to the Green Bay Packers, coached by the legendary Vince Lombardi.

Practice was conducted in the open, and all fans were welcome to attend.

The oldest continuously operating camp in the NFL is that of Green Bay, which has held its summer training at another Catholic college, St. Norbert in DePere, Wisconsin, since 1958.
