A car driven by Donovan Baynes, 17, crashed shortly before 10 p.m. Saturday on Rodi Road, the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office said. Baynes was taken to Forbes Regional Hospital, where he died.

Rhone survived the crash. Her mother told Channel 11 News that Rhone remained hospitalized as of Tuesday. She underwent surgery earlier in the day and continues to recover, her mother said.

The car Donovan was in with his girlfriend, Alexis Rhone, 17, struck a utility pole, Allegheny County spokeswoman Amie Downs said.

Family and friends were still in shock at Tuesday night’s game over Baynes' sudden death.

“I last saw him Friday night when Penn Hills played Woodland Hills in the basketball game. (I) saw him, waved to him and that was the last time I saw him,” family friend Ron Wiggins said.

The opposing team Tuesday night presented Baynes' mother with a jersey with her son’s number on the back.

Baynes, a senior, was a member of the Penn Hills High School football team.

His peers on the Penn Hills basketball team presented Baynes' mother with her son’s game day football jersey.

Standing in all black as an act of solidarity and wearing shirts that read, “Long Live No. 40,” Baynes' classmates vowed to always remember the standout student who left an impact on the community in a short amount of time.

A GoFundMe page has been created to assist Baynes’ family with funeral expenses and to create a scholarship fund in his name (
