SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH — A Utah parent says the punishment her child was given for talking in class went too far.

The 12-year-old student sent this selfie to his mother after he says his teacher told him put duct tape on his mouth.

It all happened with just three days left in the school year.

The school district says the teacher has 29 years of experience but is now on administrative leave, pending an investigation.

The student's mom says she is blown away by what happened.

"So I had to and she was standing there mad. What was I going to do? He was just like why would she do this? Why would she do this? And he's embarrassed," says Tara Dimoh.

Ben Horsley of the Granite School District responded, saying: "There's potentially a handful of students that were involved. We don't find the behavior appropriate at all."

Dimoh says she's not looking to get the teacher fired and even continues to speak highly of the school.
