NEW KENSINGTON, Pa.,None — A man is in custody in a fatal shooting that spilled into a New Kensington dollar store.
Investigators say 34-year-old Raymond Rivera turned himself in Friday, about 12 hours after shooting broke out at a New Kensington strip mall.
Officials identified the victim as 37-year-old John LaToy Evans, of New Kensington.
"We're tired of the violence here. I lost my brother in 1999, and it need to stop. This is ridiculous. People are losing their lives," said Tasha Williams, the victim's friend.
New Kensington police say Rivera fired at least six times after an argument at Central City Plaza about 10:30 p.m. Thursday. A second man was wounded.
Police say the shooting started in the parking lot and several people then ran into the Family Dollar store, where at least one shot was fired inside. Investigators say witnesses at the scene named Rivera as the shooter.
Defense attorney James Ecker says the shooting may be a case of self-defense.
"He called us last night. He was extremely upset about what had happened. As you know, things are not always the way they seem," said Ecker.
