SABULA, IOWA — A swarm of mayflies covered a bridge in Iowa so thickly that police had to shut it down.
It was like something out of a scary movie. Millions of mayflies covered the Savanna Sabula Bridge. "Biggest thing I noticed was after cars were stopped and sitting for so long while we're trying to get cars moving again is they were probably piled knee high in front of their headlights from just sitting there," says Reserve Officer Stephen Thayer of the Sabula Police Department. The Iowa Department of Transportation dispatched a snow plow to clear their side of the bridge and Illinois copied the idea to clear their end.
The Iowa Department of Transportation will keep lights on the bridge turned off over the next few weeks in order to keep the bugs off the bridge.
