PITTSBURGH — Despite the weather being colder than usual this time of year, about 40,000 participants from more than 20 countries took part in the 2017 Dick's Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon.

The winner of the men's division was Jacob Chemtai, who finished the full marathon in just over 2 hours, 15 minutes.

In the women's division, A.D. Hailemaryam finished the full marathon first in about 2 hours, 36 minutes.

The event's public relations staff reported about 35,000 runners took to the streets of Pittsburgh for the 26.2-mile race.  There was also a half-marathon of 13.1 miles.

As of 10:30 a.m., the marathon's UPMC medical team had treated 56 participants, according to the event's Twitter account.

Dr. Ron Roth, marathon medical director, said in a video that most of the complaints the runners had were cramps, aches and some nausea. Roth said most of the runners appeared fine after crossing the finish line.

By the end of the event at 2 p.m., the medical team said a total of 131 runners were treated throughout the day on the course and in the medical tent.

Roth said that about half of those people were on the course, and 17 of the 131 were transported to local hospitals.

Last year, 260 runners required treatment and were taken to hospitals.
