SHIPPINGPORT, Pa. — Two workers have died and four others were injured after an accident late Tuesday night at the Bruce Mansfield Power Plant in Shippingport, Beaver County.

1.      BRUCE MANSFIELD IS FIRSTENERGY'S LARGEST COAL-FIRED POWER PLANT.

Here are the five things you need to know about the Bruce Mansfield Plant:

  • The plant is located in Shippingport, Pennsylvania, along the Ohio River, approximately 25 miles northwest of Pittsburgh.
  • The site covers 473 acres.
  • The plant is up river from the Beaver Valley Power Station, a nuclear-powered plant.

2.      WHAT DO THEY DO AT THE PLANT?

  • The plant operates three coal-fired units that produce 2,490 megawatts of electricity.
  • At full capacity, the plant's generating units can produce 59 million kilowatthours of electricity daily.
  • The plant uses more than seven million tons of coal annually.

3.      THE BRUCE MANSFIELD PLANT IS ONE OF BEAVER COUNTY'S TOP EMPLOYERS.

  • The plant employs 350 people in Beaver County.
  • According the Pennsylvania Department of Labor, First Energy Generation Corporation is the 23rd largest employer in the county.

4.      WHAT IMPACT DO THEY HAVE ON THE ECONOMY?

  • In addition to being one of the Beaver County's largest employers, the plant pays approximately $1.5 million in property taxes every year.

5.     WHAT IS THE PLANTS IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT?

  • The Bruce Mansfield Plant is a recognized showplace for environmental technology. More than one out of every three dollars spent to build the $1.4 billion facility was spent on environmental protection.
  • One out of three employees operates pollution control equipment.
  • Most recently, the plant was updated to comply with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Mercury and Air Toxics Standards.
