A fire Thursday night in Westmoreland County left nine people, including seven children, homeless.

Firefighters said that the fire on Baggaley Avenue in Latrobe started on the home's second floor. They had to pull 1,000 feet of hose just to get water to the home.

Neighbor Melissa Wiedeburg said four of the people living there have disabilities so her husband and son rushed to help.

“He runs out, and our one older son, Eric, comes out, too, and helps them get out of the house. It was a complete blaze, glass shooting out of the window, the little girls are crying. It was just so sad,” Wiedeburg said.

No one was hurt, but the home suffered significant smoke and water damage. All of the family’s possessions were ruined. Neighbors are now pitching in to help out.

"It's just heartbreaking because, they're such a big family to begin with, and it's already hard to raise such a big family, and to see that happen,” Weideburg said.

Neighbors are collecting donations for the children. The family has a baby boy, two girls and two middle school-aged boys. Here’s a list of the clothing sizes needed:

  • Baby boy: 6-12 months
  • Girls (2): 5-10
  • Boys (2): 8-14

Donations can be dropped off at 1109 Baggaley Ave. in Latrobe. The elementary school and American Red Cross are also helping the family.

"I don't think they would give up, and I don't think we would give up on them. We will make sure they will be OK, and I think, they'll know that too,” Weideburg said.
