PITTSBURGH — The Port Authority of Allegheny County is being audited to determine whether it is properly serving the needs of riders, Auditor General Eugene DePasquale announced Friday.
DePasquale said the audit will focus on meeting the needs of the public by looking at routes and the hiring of police officers and drivers.
The Port Authority has a proposal for a bus rapid transit system that would make traveling downtown and to Oakland easier. However, it would replace some existing lines, like in the Mon Valley.

“It’s not just making sure the money is spent right, we want to make sure the objective of trying to move people to work is also being done effectively as well,” DePasquale said.

In March 2014, an audit of the Port Authority found that improvements were needed in its contracting and procedural practices and revealed that excessive relocation expenses of more than $28,000 were paid to an employee, according to a news release. The same employee double-billed the agency $4,300 in relocation costs.
In two other relocation reimbursements, the port authority failed to follow its procedures, costing the agency nearly $5,000, the release said.
