A Brighton Township woman is charged after she allegedly overdosed and left drug paraphernalia within reach of her 9-month-old baby.

Police said they found two uncapped syringes and a burnt spoon within inches of the baby's crib.

Ashley Dawn Smiley, 27, is charged with endangering the welfare of children.

Police and emergency responders went to the home on Dutch Ridge Road after a report of a heroin overdose. When they arrived, Smiley's boyfriend was performing CPR on her. Medics administered Narcan, and she regained consciousness.

Smiley's boyfriend said she had injected heroin in the bedroom, which they share with their child, according to a criminal complaint.

Police said that drug paraphernalia was in reaching distance of the baby's crib, and an uncapped syringe was found in a trash basket in the room about 2 feet from the crib.

Smiley lives in the home with her boyfriend and his parents. The baby's grandmother said the infant was not in the room when Smiley overdosed.

Police and the family said the grandmother is taking care of the baby so Smiley can get into a treatment program.

Smiley was transported to the emergency room at Heritage Valley-Beaver for further treatment and evaluation. She is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing on April 10.
