PITTSBURGH — A precautionary flush and boil water advisory is in effect for part of Pittsburgh’s Lawrenceville neighborhood as crews make repairs to a water main break.
The break was reported shortly before 9 p.m. Thursday on Penn Avenue, between 39th and 45th streets.
The Pittsburgh Water & Sewer Authority said the break happened in a 6-inch water main and required the drainage of a 20-inch water main.

When there is a decrease in water pressure, contaminants can enter the drinking water, according to the PWSA. For that reason, the advisory was put in place out of an abundance of caution.
Tests are being conducted to confirm adequate disinfectant levels and verify that the water is safe to consume, the PWSA said.
Penn Avenue is closed between 40th and Main streets until work is complete.
