BUTLER, Pa. — It’s some happy news for Butler County: no new sanctions will be handed down by the state.

At the beginning of the week, state health leaders talked with Butler County leaders and said there could be new mandates with coronavirus numbers rapidly increasing. It was possible that bars and restaurants would be banned from in-person dining.

Butler County leaders said they were told Friday afternoon that there would no new state mandated guidelines.

“I think it was a knee-jerk reaction. The numbers are not there,” Butler County Commissioner Leslie Osche said.

“It’s important for the public to know the Butler County Commissioners do not make business closure decisions and would not have endorsed business closures,” Butler County Commissioner Kim Geyer said.

The state, not the county, regulates bars and restaurants.

Butler County was one of several areas in western Pennsylvania that state officials indicated would be subject to measures aimed at curbing the rising levels of COVID-19 cases. Other counties affected included Beaver, Washington and Westmoreland.
