PITTSBURGH — The Cathedral of Learning on the University of Pittsburgh’s campus in Oakland reopened Tuesday morning after it was evacuated Monday morning because of a water main break.
An emergency text was sent out by the university to alert students to the evacuation. Initially, the first three floors were evacuated. People then began leaving upper floors, but they had to use stairs because elevator shafts were flooded.
“We got a phone call right away saying there was a water main break. It's pretty convenient knowing but also stinks that classes are canceled,” Sam Smallwood, a Pitt student, said.
A sprinkler system on the third floor broke, causing the flooding, according to the university. Video shared on social media showed water flowing over a stairwell inside the building.

A University of Pittsburgh spokesperson said Monday night's classes were moved to other locations.
The extent of the damages are still unknown, but the nationality rooms were not damaged, the spokesperson said.
