PITTSBURGH — Carnegie Mellon University will now require that faculty and staff, in addition to students, are vaccinated against COVID-19, it was announced Friday.
The vaccination requirement for students came down in May. Until now, faculty and staff were only being strongly encouraged to get the shot.

CMU President Farnam Jahanian addressed the policy in a letter to the university community, pointing to concern about the delta variant a little more than a week out from the start of classes.
U.S.-based faculty and staff are expected to upload confirmation of their vaccination status to CMU’s COVID-19 Vaccine Database by Sept. 30.

As of Friday, Jahanian said that 75% of faculty and staff have already uploaded their vaccine documentation. As for students, 85% have done so, and the university is “actively following up with each student who has not uploaded their information or requested an exemption to ensure 100% compliance.”
Faculty and staff can request an exemption for medical or religious reasons, just as students can.
