"This is a big day for Pittsburgh and for CMU. Our city and this university are the heart and soul of an industry that is already changing the world," Argo CEO and co-founder Bryan Salesky said.
CMU and Argo are teaming up for a 5-year-, $15 million research project that will focus on the safety of self-driving cars, improving fuel efficiency and creating technology for operating in inclement weather and construction zones.
"Growing up in this city, seeing the city knocked down to its knees in the 1980s wondering if it would ever come back. And now not only come back, but be viewed as the city of innovation. It takes a deep commitment to make that happen," Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto said.
The project is also expected to bring some high quality, high paying jobs to the area as well.
"Pittsburgh's ecosystem got strengthened today. This is a big day for this region," Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald said.
