FOX CHAPEL, Pa. — The Fox Chapel council voted Monday night to remove the word “squaw” from two roads and a trail.

Critics said the word is a slur against Native American women.

Earlier this year, O’Hara Township dropped the slur from a park name after a petition was circulated.

“What better way to celebrate Native American history month than to remove a racial slur like that. It was a beautiful feeling,” said activist Kayla Portis.

One activist cheered the timing of Fox Chapel’s vote, coming just days before Thanksgiving.

Fox Chapel will take suggestions on renaming the streets and trail, selecting potential new names by March, and with the changes taking effect by May.
