Bain Harrold, 13, was outside when he saw smoke start to pour out from the building and rushed back into his house to call for help.
"Smoke started to get heavier as the fire trucks came," he said.
A pregnant woman and her husband are among the people who live in the apartments, Channel 11's Melanie Gillespie reported.
"I kept hearing a beeping sound from smoke alarms and I smelled smoke coming out from downstairs," said Sabrina Keefer, who lives in one of the apartments. She's expecting a baby boy in October.
No injuries were reported.
Harrold's quick-thinking and action is being praised for helping save the house from even more damage.
