GLASSPORT — Firefighters fought a blaze in Glassport that started Sunday morning.

The incident occurred in the 600 block of Michigan Avenue around 9:40 a.m.

A neighbor reported hearing a popping noise and seeing an electrical box on fire and called 911.

“We got a report of an electrical box arcing. First units on the scene reported heavy smoke coming from the attic,” Glassport Fire Dept. Chief Bruce Snyir said.

Snyir said the home was unoccupied and under renovation.

“I had to rush from work, not knowing if that was my house on fire. I have four kids that stay in the house also,” neighbor Leonard Short said, who lives two doors down. “I’m just glad there were no fatalities, that’s the main thing.”

Snyir said the preliminary cause is thought to be electrical in nature, but the investigation is still ongoing.

“There’s a significant amount of damage,” he said, on the third floor and roof area.
