Former Jeannette hemp drying facility fined $29k

JEANNETTE, Pa. — The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection is ordering the owner of a former hemp drying facility in Jeannette to pay $29,000.

The DEP says Patriot Shield Pennsylvania broke air quality rules related to the hemp drying process.

According to our Trib partners, Patriot Shield last week settled a lawsuit with a packaging company that claimed the hemp odor contaminated its products at the Thomas Avenue warehouse.

Odor complaints started pouring into city offices in September 2019 and the months after from neighboring residents, according to the suit.

The company was ordered to cease operations.
