Dr. Levine, former Pennsylvania Health Secretary, receives additional government role

WASHINGTON — Former Pennsylvania Health Secretary Dr. Rachel Levine has a new role and a new rank.

She was sworn in Tuesday as Admiral of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. It’s a group that responds to emergencies like COVID-19 and provides medical care after hurricanes.

Levine is also the Assistant U.S. Secretary for Health, the nation’s highest ranking openly transgender official.

Her new position makes her the first openly transgender four-star officer.
