Here are positive things happening in our community (5/17/20)

PITTSBURGH — We know that the coronavirus pandemic is an overwhelming and stressful time for everybody, so we’re going to put together some positive things that are happening within our community to help those in need.

It’s apparent that during hard times, the Pittsburgh region always comes together to help one another.

Giant Eagle, GetGo guests raise more than $2 million for local food banks

Giant Eagle launched a donation campaign across all of its supermarket and GetGo locations on March 26.

The company said this week, the funds raised surpassed $2 million.

Shopper have the option to donate in increments of $1, $2 or $5.

A campaign end date has not yet been established.

Giant Eagle will also contribute $250,00 toward the fund that will be donated to to Feeding America member food banks in Western Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Maryland and Indiana including the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.

100th birthday celebration held for WWII US Navy veteran

A 100th birthday celebration was held for WWII United States Navy Veteran Bryce Billetdeaux.

The Northern Regional Police Department posted pictures from the celebration on their Facebook page.

Washington Co. couple make the most of their wedding during pandemic

The Maxwells said they spent eight months planning their wedding, and then the COVID-19 pandemic hit.

The couple said they had to cancel everything.

Instead of a big crowd, they just had immediate family and instead of getting married inside a church, they opted for the family farm.

A crowd of 200 got a chance to watch the couple tie the knot on Facebook Live.

99th birthday parade held for woman

A parade was held for a woman as she turned 99 years old in Westmoreland County. Alice Dawson was all smiles for her big day.

Carnegie Mellon holds virtual graduation ceremony

Carnegie Mellon University held a virtual graduation ceremony Sunday. Alumni participating included Ted Danson, Leslie Odom Jr., Ming-Na Wen, and Billy Porter among others.
