PITTSBURGH — Residents of the Hill District said they were devastated to learn that the Hill House organization was dissolving and its buildings would be sold off.

But a local developer and community organization are partnering to purchase and preserve the history and tradition of some of those buildings.

The property where the Shop and Save once stood is not included, but to try to fill the void, the group started the Soko Community market, which is held at the Hill House main building the third Saturday of every month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This Saturday, it's being held from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. in collaboration with another event.

"There were a lot of folks before us did a lot of hard work to create this. As the new owners, now we have to build on top of that, respecting the work that came before us," Emeka Onwugbenu, from E Properties and Development, said.

"The market is focused  on bringing produce back to the community," Marimba Milliones, president and CEO of the Hill Community Development Corporation, said.

For an update on the Hill House properties, you can attend the community meeting Sept. 5 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Grayson Center.
