Historic landmark in Allegheny Co. hosts families for drive-in DNC watch party

ALLEGHENY CO., Pa. — Dozens of families drove to a national historic landmark right in Allegheny County for a watch party of the Democratic National Convention Thursday night.

The Carrie Blast Furnaces in Rankin are symbolic of the domination of the steel industry and the once bustling economy.

On Thursday, local voters came for a special drive-in to watch former Vice President Joe Biden officially accept the Democratic Party’s nomination for president in November.

They spent the final night of the DNC from their cars, socially distanced on the big screen. Many of them, including delegates, would have been in Milwaukee if not for the COVID-19 pandemic.

Jobs are a huge issue for families, especially with the coronavirus crippling the national and local economy. Voters Channel 11 talked to said key election issues for them include health care, climate change and human decency.

“I think there are some really stark differences that have been outlined throughout the campaign. As an LGBTQ person, this administration has been terrible, especially for people who just want to go serve in the military,” said Sean Meloy.

The Republican National Convention takes place next week.
