Ice storm knocks out power to nearly half of Garrett County

GARRETT COUNTY, Md. — An ice storm has knocked out power to more than 40 percent of Garrett County, Maryland.

Freezing rain started Monday morning in Maryland’s most western county and continued on and off into this morning.

Many areas have received a 1/3 to 1/2-inch to a half of an inch of ice that has brought down hundreds of trees and power lines.

Garrett County’s Emergency Management is reporting at least 50 are roads blocked due to trees and power lines.

Nearly 8,000 people were without power as of 8 a.m. Tuesday.

Freezing rain should transition over to scattered snow showers later Tuesday, but temperatures will drop into the teens at night, with wind chills in the single digits by morning.
