PITTSBURGH — The owner of Allegheny Crane Rental and Rigging told Channel 11 his company started working on plans to get the PAT bus out of the wreckage within hours of the collapse.
“We made it happen but with everyone’s help. And that’s what Pittsburgh is about,” said Kyrk Pyros. “We had three back up plans in case it didn’t work. It was constantly being worked on.”
Pyros said their final plan would have been to cut the bus apart if they couldn’t lift it in one piece. He said one of the most difficult things to work around was the “accordion” part of the bus.
“The bus being an accordion has a knuckle for like a universal joint in a car. That’s great for them going around busses, but when we’re pick it up, it would be like this and flip over,” he said.
A wooden brace was built inside the bus.
“It allows the city to pull together. It’s a catastrophe. Thank God no one got hurt, but in true Pittsburgh spirit and grit, everybody pulled together. There’s not one human being here who did not pull together,” Pyros said.
