The jacket and helmet Mikey Zier wore were laid out in his honor Monday at the Summit Hose fire company.

Zier, 17, was just about to start his senior year of high school.

"No one likes to get that call at 1 in the morning. It was the worst call," said Kevin Rowlands, Zier's uncle. "He was very caring, very loving, he was fun to be around."

Zier and his girlfriend's mother, Beth Ann Bevridge, 43, were both killed when a car driven by a 25-year-old man crossed the center line and collided with their vehicle head-on.

His girlfriend is in the hospital, awaiting surgery.

Zier was a junior firefighter at the Summit Hose fire company.

"A lot of the juniors looked up to him," said Tarek Masaoud, assistant fire chief of Summit Hose fire company. "He was a leader for them, a role model, he led by example."

Black lace is draped across a wreath and turnout gear rested on the edge of Engine 282 as a way for fellow firefighters to remember Zier, who was a junior captain at the department.

Funeral arrangements are still being made, but the fire station does plan on holding a procession.
