Law student from Pittsburgh killed trying to cross railroad tracks in Vermont

ROYALTON, Vt. — A 23-year-old law student from Pittsburgh was killed when he was hit by an Amtrak train in Vermont while trying to cross railroad tracks.

According to the Royalton Police Department, Thomas Fennell was a student at Vermont Law School.

Just before 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, police said they were dispatched for a report of a motor vehicle and train crash in the town of Royalton, Vermont. Chief Loretta Stalnaker saw a green Jeep Cherokee on the west side of the road in a grassy area.

She checked the person in the driver’s seat of the Jeep and determined that Fennell was dead.

Investigators said Fennell turned onto the road and crossed the railroad tracks. He then backed into a driveway to turn around and was attempting to cross the tracks again when he was hit by the Amtrak train.

The intersection was not marked by gates.
