ROSS TOWNSHIP, Pa. — One person was rescued in a house fire by a good Samaritan in Ross Township Wednesday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to a home around 12 p.m. after flames broke out at the home on Sally Ann Drive.

There were three people inside at the time. One of them had to be rescued from the flames by a long-time neighbor.

The good Samaritan went into the smoke-filled house to rescue Jerry O’Brien, his neighbor, by wheeling him to safety in a black office chair.

O’Brien is the Ross Township tax collector, but the fire marshal said no tax record were stored at the home.

The fire marshal told Channel 11 the fire started in the game room, but they are investigating its cause.

Damage to the home was extensive, but neighbors kept talking about the bravery of O’Brien’s neighbor to save him.

“I think he's a hero,” Beth Koss, another neighbor, said. “Who knows what would have happened? He's an older gentleman, so it could have been a lot worse.”

O’Brien was taken to the hospital and was treated for smoke inhalation, but he is believed to be okay.

Unfortunately, the family’s dog died in the fire.
