BETHEL PARK, Pa. — A man accused of attacking another man inside a Bethel Park restaurant has been indicted by a federal grand jury on a hate crime charge, officials announced Thursday.

Jeffrey Burgess, 54, is charged with violating the Hate Crimes Prevention Act. He is accused of willfully causing bodily injury to a man in November because of his perceived race, color and national origin.

The attack happened at the Red Robin at South Hills Village. The victim, a man of Indian descent, was allegedly punched in the head by Burgess, who also used racial and anti-Muslim slurs.

If convicted, Burgess faces a statutory maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, a fine of $250,000 or both.
