North Hills landslides narrow roadways, frustrating drivers

Landslides in the North Hills have limited nearby roadways, leading to frustrated drivers and near-accidents.

Sections of Thompson Run Road and Rochester Road are down to one lane, requiring drivers to pause at stop signs and alternately move forward.

“It can get very backed up and takes a long time to get through,” said one motorist.

Channel 11 only had to spend five minutes on the section of Thompson Run Road between Sutter and Russell roads to see several near-confrontations between drivers who just couldn't agree on whose turn it was.

The road is down to one lane of alternating traffic with stop signs in both directions.

“It hasn't been too bad; it depends on what time you hit it,” said another driver.

Geotechs working for Allegheny County will be on the scene this week and the public works department hopes to have a repair plan within the next 30 days.

There's a similar situation seven miles away on Rochester Road on the Ross-McCandless border, where the road is breaking apart and starting to slide.

People living here and working at the nearby Good Loven Cookie Shop have been dealing with it for two weeks.

“I do work here and I do work for Sir Pizza next door, and every once in a while customers will get upset when their pizza is 10 minutes late, but I'm stuck up the road, of course,” said Jim Jensen.

PennDOT plans to shore up the landslide sometime this spring before paving Rochester Road this summer.
