Olympics officials to meet to discuss safety

TOKYO, Japan — Tokyo Olympics officials will meet this week to discuss even tighter measures to ensure the games can go ahead safely after staff members tested positive for COVID-19.

Sixteen days to go until the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics, and scrutiny is high. Games organizer say two staff members working at the athlete’s village have tested positive for coronavirus. The worry they have a few days ago they were dining with other staff members in violation of Tokyo’s COVID rules.

Japan’s government is pushing ahead with the games despite widespread criticism and COVID concerns.

More athletes and officials are arriving as the Delta variant is spreading across Asia. And less than 14% of Japan’s population is vaccinated.

Japan’s prime minister has not ruled out another state of emergency or holding the games without any spectators. Already attendance for the opening ceremony has been slashed

Games organizers, IOC official and medical experts are expected to meet Thursday to discuss tightening measures even more to ensure the games can go ahead safely.
