FREEPORT, Pa. — Some parents in the Freeport Area School District are outraged over the superintendent’s controversial comment regarding policing mask mandates.

During a private faculty meeting at the district, leaders were coming up with possible options on how to handle any mask issues. According to sources, Superintendent Ian Magness made a passing comment that the Office of Children, Youth and Families would be called if a student refuses to wear a mask and a parent doesn’t comply with the state mandate as well.

Some parents heard about it and are very upset, calling it a threat.

“I am frightened that they would actually consider involving an agency of that stature just because a child refuses to wear a mask,” parent Christina Coppola said.

One mother said she pulled her son out of the district over the incident.

“Its kind of threating we as parents are losing our rights and control with our own kids,” Halie Shook, who took her second-grade son out of the district, said. “After everything with the school board saying the CYS and have to wear masks he didn’t go back to school after that and now enrolled in cyber school.”

However the superintendent said the comment was taken out of context and apologized, saying, “we have not, nor do we intend to, or would we burden CYS with a singular issue such as this.”

The superintendent told our partners at the Trib that student safety is always the top priority and the district works with families on a case by case basis to resolve any problems.
