HOMESTEAD, Pa. — There are concerns about registered sex offenders who live in a home near two local schools and a park.

The house sits on East 11th Avenue in Homestead and there are two schools just a block away in each direction.

"It's pretty difficult for our borough because we're a walking district these children sometimes walk alone," said council member Mary Nesby.

As well as a council member, Nesby is also a parent.

"Whether they're watched, registered or anything, there has to be something that states that we cannot have that within a certain range of a school" Nesby said.

That's something Homestead Mayor Betty Esper said she's spent years trying to fix.

"We tried to do something about it but the law wasn't there to help us," Esper said.

Channel 11 started looking into the property after concerned parents first brought it to our attention.

According to the Megans Law website, there are more than a dozen registered sex offenders inside the house, which is not illegal.

The man who owns the house disputes the number on the website and says it's a group residence with the people there are supervised around the clock. He also told us he didn't know there were any concerns and he hasn't received any complaints since moving in years ago.

"They shouldn't be near my schools, not that they are going to do anything, it's just the thought that there are sex offenders living here," Esper said.
