PITTSBURGH — Pennsylvania state representative and Pittsburgh mayoral candidate Ed Gainey said he wants to resume the legal challenge of UPMC’s nonprofit status.
In a news release, Gainey laid out his economic policy agenda that he would pursue if elected mayor. Number one on his list was looking at the healthcare giant and how it is able to not pay city and school district taxes. In the release, Gainey said that “some of the biggest players in our city are sitting on the bench” and that the company needs to “pay their fair share.”
“The region’s most profitable corporation should pay taxes like anyone else,” Gainey said in the release.

Other parts of Gainey’s agenda include supporting the unionization of workers at UPMC and other major employers, ending unaccountable tax giveaways and financial incentives for major corporations, increasing both public and private investments in workforce development and expanding opportunities for wealth accumulation for disadvantaged communities.
