NEW KENSINGTON, Pa. — One person was found dead after a fire Wednesday night at an apartment building in New Kensington, officials said.

Firefighters were called shortly after 7 p.m. to the building on Kenneth Avenue. The assistant fire chief lives around the corner and was the first one on scene.

Crews couldn’t make entry into the building right away because of heavy smoke and flames, according to the fire chief. Once inside, one person was found dead in a first-floor apartment.

Eight people who live in the building were displaced by the fire and are being helped to find places to stay.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
