PITTSBURGH — St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in Pittsburgh will be different again this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and Pittsburgh Public Safety said it’s ready to respond.

In a statement issued Thursday, the department urged vigilance when it comes to pandemic restrictions.

The department also promised to focus on keeping everyone safe and will be out to catch people who break the law.

Director Wendell Hissrich announced a zero-tolerance policy for disruptive and illegal behavior, including underage drinking, public intoxication and drinking and driving.

Pittsburgh police and partner law enforcement agencies will monitor crowds for any illegal activity.

DUI patrols will actively seek anyone who drives under the influence.

Without the usual celebrations, like the postponed St. Patrick’s Day Parade, bar and restaurant owners are taking a big hit. However, they’ll work through it and follow guidelines.

Bars and restaurants will operate at 50% capacity, so long as they’ve completed Pennsylvania’s online certification allowing them to do so. People still must buy food when drinking.

City officials said the fire department will be checking to make sure businesses are following occupancy limits. If they aren’t, they will be shut down.
