PITTSBURGH — Renovations are now underway on a new police substation in Pittsburgh’s South Side.

It’ll open in 2022 in the old South Side police station on 18th Street and Mary Street. It’s attached to a city fire station.

This comes at a time when the South Side has seen an increase in violent crime in recent months. Traffic restrictions that were put in place on East Carson Street to improve safety were recently lifted.

The city says the new substation will operate on weekends, as well as times when police are dispatched in high volume, instead of officers traveling from the main Zone 3 office in the city’s Allentown neighborhood.

Pittsburgh police currently has substations downtown and in Northview Heights. The South Side substation will be the third. Another in Homewood is also expected to open next year.
