BETHEL PARK, Pa. — Bethel Park police are searching for three men who spent three hours early this morning stealing from people’s cars. They are urging residents to lock car doors, posting videos from this mornings thefts on social media. Many of the thefts were caught on doorbell cameras as the thieves stole goods, money and one gun. Police have already received nearly twenty reports of theft and expect more.
“We’ve had 18+reports right now. We are still recovering property, mostly purses that were discarded. And one firearm was stolen from a vehicle,” said police officer Sean Gorman.
Gorman says the holiday season is a classic time for this kind of crime.
“During the holidays everyone leaves gifts in their car, going store to store. There are higher amount of valuables that can definitely be taken advantage of,” he said.
Police departments across the Channel 11 viewing area have taken to social media over the last few weeks with similar warnings about unlocked vehicles. They also urge you to call 911 as soon as you doorbell alerts you, giving officers a chance to catch the thieves in progress.
“We can’t stress how important it is to contact us immediately. Those minutes are crucial. We are finding out people got alerts or were woken up and saw something suspicious and didn’t call us at the time.”
