PITTSBURGH — Now that we’ve changed the clocks, you may find your sleeping patterns are a little off. What better way to get back on schedule and celebrate National Napping Day than by catching some Z’s?

The day was created in 1999 by Boston University professor William Anthony, Ph.D., and his wife Camille, the president of The Napping Company.

They specifically chose the Monday after the return of daylight saving time to celebrate the day because people are usually more “nap-ready” after losing an hour of sleep.

More than a third of American adults are not getting enough sleep on a regular basis, according to a new study in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In their book, “The Art of Napping,” the pair identified eight benefits of napping:

  1. Napping makes you feel better by improving your mood.
  2. Napping makes you more productive by enhancing your performance.
  3. Napping is an inexpensive refreshment – it won’t cost you a cent.
  4. Napping is a “no sweat” activity – it won’t wear out your joints.
  5. A doctor’s orders are not necessary – napping can be self-prescribed.
  6. There is no weight gain associated with napping – you can’t eat while you’re asleep.
  7. Napping is not an invasive procedure – no one needs to do anything to you.
  8. Napping has no dangerous side effects – as long as you aren’t driving!
