PITTSBURGH — A number of neighbors in a Pittsburgh’s Overbrook neighborhood are fed up with car accidents that are causing damage to their own cars and homes.
Residents on Maytide Street told Channel 11 the drivers often speed, and some of them drive drunk.

One woman, Soraya Bey, said she has had four parked cars totaled by erratic drivers, while her home has been damaged twice.
“Every time an accident happens in this particular area, they come up on the curb, they hit the pole and they ended up hitting our cars,” Bey said.
Over the span of almost four years, the cost of damage to Bey’s vehicles and home is more than $20,000.
Car insurance helps, but Bey and her neighbors don’t want to see another car accident or someone get hurt.
A representative in that district told neighbors officials might be able to put money in the 2020 or 2021 budget for speed bumps, but they are afraid another crash will happen. There was a crash last week and a few weeks before that.
City officials issued the following statement regarding the issues with the road:
“DOMI investigated Maytide Street on Thursday June 11. Maytide Street is a narrow collector street with multiple hills where vehicles can pick up speed. To make solutions more difficult, there are a large number of residents with houses extremely close to the road without driveways. These residents have to park their cars on the sidewalk, right along the travel lane.
DOMI is currently investigating traffic calming measures, if Maytide Street meets DOMI standards for traffic calming, due to the length of the roadway the cost of speed humps will exceed $100,000. DOMI is creating a layout plan and cost estimate for Council District 4 to present for a 2021 capital budget request.
It has to be budgeted in advance. The City works on a calendar-year budget system, so the next round of funding won’t be decided until the end of the year when City Council approves the 2021 budget in December.”
