The child's mother, Shante Reed, said the driver hit her daughter on the shoulder on April 20.
"The behavior he displayed was inappropriate," Reed said.
She admitted her daughter was standing up on the bus ride when she shouldn't have been, but she said she doesn't like how the driver handled it from there.
"He asked her why is she standing up. Does she have poop in her pants," Reed said.
Her child, third-grader Schiffon Sherrod, said, "When I was getting off, the bus driver hit me on my shoulder."
Reed filed a complaint with First Student and the Pittsburgh Public Schools. The district said its transportation department sent the complaint to the Child Line and suspended the driver.
"It's very frustrating for you to send your 8-year-old daughter or child to school, and to know an adult you leave your child in the care of is actually physically and verbally attacking the child," Reed said.
Pittsburgh police said they looked into the incident but said it didn't rise to the level of child abuse or assault charges. District officials said the bus has a camera, but the camera was not working.
