WASHINGTON COUNTY — Interstate 70 eastbound at the Speers Bridge was closed to traffic after a multiple-vehicle crash Saturday morning.
Washington County 911 said emergency personnel responded to the scene at 6:44 a.m.
Rostraver Central Fire Department said the incident included entrapment with one person confined and freed using the Jaws of Life. Two Good Samaritans were among those injured in the crash.
Natale and another person were trying to help a driver who hit the concrete barrier near the bridge when another driver smashed into that wreckage.
One of the Good Samaritans was a police officer, Mike Natale, who was on his way to start his shift at the West Newton Police Department.
A minute later, another car hit one of the Samaritan’s vehicles and compounded the accident.
Three people were rushed to the hospital via ambulance, two by medical helicopters from LifeFlight and STAT MedEvac, the department said.
Several fire departments and emergency responders helped shut down the area and assist victims, including the Charleroi Fire Department, Belle Vernon Volunteer Fire Company and North Belle Vernon Fire Department.
I-70 eastbound was closed to all traffic while police investigated, but the scene was cleared as of 10 a.m.
Police told Channel 11 they are looking into possible charges for the driver who caused the second crash.
