SHALER, Pa. — Shaler Area’s varsity girls basketball program teamed up with North Allegheny’s varsity student-athletes during Wednesday night’s game to show a united front against racism.
Before the Titans and Tigers face off at Shaler Area High School, the teams warmed up in T-shirts displaying a unified anti-racism message. The initiative is supported by Shaler Area School District’s Response to Racism committee.
Shaler Area Coach Cornelious Nesbit, who is part of the committee, said the purpose of the game is “education, awareness, and action.”
This season, the Shaler Area Titans have been focused on how the team can use their platform to become leaders in the community to understand and respond to racism.
Before the game, former Titans girls basketball standout Meg Lydon (Class of 2018) returned to her alma mater to address the student-athletes and those in attendance about how athletics brings people from all different backgrounds together and about her personal response to racism.
Additionally, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes created a music playlist for intermission at halftime of the varsity game.
