Police: wanted man found in wooded area of McCandless with a hatchet

MCCANDLESS, Pa. — UPDATE (APRIL 15, 2021 5:13 p.m.):

McCandless Police released a statement on Thursday that the individual they were searching for has been located and is currently being assisted.

Law enforcement told Channel 11 that the man wanted for mental health evaluation was located by K-9 units in a wooded area of McCandless near Babcock Road he was living in a makeshift shack and had a hatchet and baseball bat.

McCandless Police were searching for a man reportedly armed with a knife or hatchet near UPMC Passavant Hospital.

ORIGINAL STORY (APRIL 13, 2021 8:21 p.m.):

According to a Facebook post from the police, people in the area were being told to stay inside and should call 911 if they see anything unusual.

Shortly before 11 p.m., police said they ended the search without finding the man. They said he suffers from “mental health disorders” and they are concerned about his wellbeing.
