CLAYSVILLE, Pa. — State police say a woman stole a van that belonged to a mother and her son, who has a rare genetic disorder.

Kendall Russell is accused of leading officers on a lengthy high-speed chase from Washington to Claysville on Monday night, police said.

Russell was taken into custody after veering off a road and crashing into a concrete barrier near a set of old railroad tracks.

Autum Johnson, who owns the van, said she let Russell stay with her. Johnson said when she woke up, she found her purse and van gone.

Johnson's son, Alexander, has a rare condition called spinal muscular atrophy and goes to the hospital often for crucial injections that slow the progression of the disease. Johnson uses the van to transport Alex to the hospital and said she's waiting to find out if the van can be fixed in time for next week's hospital visit.

"He's my little hero. There's nothing I can't do as long as he's still fighting," Johnson said.

Officials said Russell's blood alcohol levels were twice the legal limit when she was arrested. She is facing a number of charges and remained in the Washington County Jail as of Tuesday.
