WILKINSBURG, Pa. — The first Black female mayor of Wilkinsburg has been censured after council members said she failed to carry out her duties.
But Mayor Marita Garrett said that’s hardly the case.
“There was no evidence. No documentation or proof of what they were bringing forth,” she said.
It was a 6-3 vote that confirmed the public disapproval of Garrett. She said she was blindsided by what happened during a recent council meeting. The council said Garrett was “misleading the public as to her statutory duties and powers regarding the Wilkinsburg Borough Police Department.” Another reason was that she hasn’t been at many council meetings.
“I’m not required to attend borough council meetings because I don’t have a legislative vote. So for the first two years of being mayor, I did attend the meetings, but council leadership made it very clear that they did not respect or care about my opinions or input,” Garrett said.
She claimed there are other motives behind the move by the council. She said she’s not going to run for another term as mayor.
