LATROBE, Pa. — A woman is accused of abusing her position with a parent-teacher organization at a Latrobe school, stealing nearly $50,000.

She was the former treasurer with the Parent Teacher Organization at Baggaley Elementary School, but instead of looking after the money, police say she grabbed it for herself.

Rachel Pitts is facing theft charges. Investigators say she admitted to stealing thousands of dollars, even writing a check for cash just two weeks ago.

According to the criminal complaint, Pitts confessed to Pennsylvania State Police investigators "writing, signing and cashing 23 checks ... for her personal gain and not for official PTO activities."

In less than a year, police say she stole more than $48,000.

Investigators say the PTO's bank raised red flags after the checks were cashed over a seven-month period.

Channel 11 reached out to Pitts, who did not answer.

Channel 11 learned she only worked as the PTO treasurer for the past year.
