Cass County Sheriff Richard Behnke confirmed to WWMT that a vehicle became stuck in a residential driveway due to heavy snowfall and that both occupants lost consciousness due to carbon monoxide poisoning while trying to dislodge it.

According to WNDU, police believe that the vehicle’s overworked engine then sparked the fire but the occupants may have already been unconscious.

The victims have not yet been identified publicly, the TV station reported.

The Pokagon Fire Department crews and Cass County sheriff’s deputies responded at about 3:50 a.m. to the call, WWMT reported.
