According to a news release from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Anthony Williams, 49, of Adel, surrendered to authorities on Wednesday. He was charged with burglary stemming from an incident at a home on Oct. 11, WALB-TV reported.

Williams was chief of the Willacoochee Police Department. He was suspended on Saturday and fired on Monday, according to the television station.

A working telephone number could not immediately be found for Williams, according to The Associated Press. It was unclear whether he had an attorney who could comment about his arrest, the news organization reported.

Police did not release any information about the alleged burglary or where it occurred.

Williams was booked into the Atkinson County Jail and was released after posting $5,000 bail, WALB reported.

This investigation is active and ongoing, the GBI said in its news release. The case will be turned over to the Alapaha Judicial Circuit after the investigation is complete.

Willacoochee is located about 40 miles northeast of Valdosta.
