HARRISBURG, OREGON — Two Vietnam veterans are talking about their recent moment of heroism.
They helped save the life of a five-year-old girl trapped in the wreckage of an accident that killed her father.
As Vietnam veterans Michael Seymour and Jim Ward were driving down the highway, they saw a motor home on fire, damaged and almost under a semi truck. An Oregon state trooper was trying to put out the fire.
Inside, US Air Force Staff Sergeant Michael Bunten, his wife's grandmother and his five year old daughter.
Seymour will never forget the scene, "I saw her. She was kind of down in a hole. And she was scramming that's my daddy call nine one one, call nine one one and it was just heart wrenching."
Seymour says he removed the window screen and crawled about half way to get debris off of her leg.
"She crawled up and she was looked at her daddy and she was screaming still. And I said come on baby come to me."
They didn't know they were working to help a fellow veteran. Bunten served six years in the air force, with multiple deployments.
His commander, Ian Dinesen, remembers him as "a shining example of nothing but selfless leadership, a can do attitude, and pride in service to not only the United States Air Force but to our great United States of America."
Bunten finished his service and was in the beginning the process of joining the Eugene police department.
A horrible day for all, but with one piece of good news. Seymour says "that little girl getting out of there is the silver lining."
